Tuesday was the first real working day. After all the troubles on monday and all correct settings were found, this time I could shoot right from the start. I had nice conversations, many people were interested in the old photography techniques. There were visitors from the USA, from Germany and also from Italy. At the end of the day two guys from Munich, which is also my homebase came along. We also found out, that probably we have one common acquaintance there. We had much fun and they left with their copies totally satisfied.
Dienstag war der erste richtige Fototag. Nach all den Problemen am Montag und nachdem ich die richtigen Einstellungen herausgefunden hatte, konnte ich gleich von Anfang an mit dem Fotografieren beginnen. Über den Tag hinweg hatte ich viele liebe Gespräche mit Touristen aus den USA, Deutschland und natürlich auch aus Italien. Am Ende des Tages kamen noch zwei Münchner vorbei und wir haben festgestellt, dass wir dort vermutlich sogar eine gemeinsame Bekannte haben. Wir hatten viel Spaß und die beiden verabschiedeten sich absolut zufrieden mit ihren Bildern.

After a visit by the authorities to pick up my permission I had a bad surprise. By perparing myself to start I found out that the light tight box inside the camera, where I have to store the paper sheets was broken. So I had to fumble with the things I had with me to fix the problem. A cigar box, in which I store bits an pieces, should become the solution. But I had to make this box light tight and build a seal for it.
I rushed through Siena and searched for some carton. Finally a lady in a little art gallery gave me a piece and I started the construction. Very limited in tools also the nail file became important.
Nach einem kurzen Behördengang, ich musste noch meine Genehmigung abholen, erlebte ich eine böse Überraschung. Bei den Startvorbereitungen merkte ich, dass die lichtdichte Box im Inneren der Kamera, in der das lichtempfindliche Fotopapier aufbewahrt wird, nicht richtig funktionierte. So musste ich nun mit „Bordmitteln“ versuchen das Problem zu lösen. Glücklicherweise hatte ich eine Zigarrenkiste dabei, in der ich Kleinteile aufbewahrte. Die war allerdings nicht lichtdicht und ich musst erst einen Falz einbauen.
Ich hastete durch Siena auf der Suche nach einem Stück Buchbinderkarton. In einer kleinen Kunsthandlung wurde ich schließlich fündig, die nette Dame schenkte mir ein Stück und ich konnte den Umbau beginnen. Ohne viel Werkzeug wurde auch die Nagelfeile systemrelevant….

At last I only missed a double-sided adhesive tape to fix the box inside the camera. After all the excitement I was finally able to start shooting photographs. At first I had to get used to the surroundings and the light. But after a few tries it worked pretty well. Pictures of the work will follow in the next post.
Am Ende ging mir nur noch ein doppelseitiges Klebeband ab, um die Box in der Kamera zu fixieren. Dann konnte ich endlich mit dem Fotografieren beginnen. Es dauerte etwas um mich auf die Umgebung einzustellen aber nach ein paar Versuchen klappte es ganz gut. Fotos der Arbeiten folgen im nächsten Beitrag.

Yesterday I arrived in Siena. I know the city from earlier trips. Two times I visited the famous Palio (the historic horse race) and I lost my heart to this beautiful city.
Today I prepare myself to start working tomorrow. So I set up my darkroom-chemicals, adjusted the camera and filled up the fridge. Soon you will hear more….
Gestern bin ich in Siena angekommen. Ich kenne die Stadt von früheren Besuchen, schon zweimal durfte ich den Palio, das historische Pferderennen erleben und ich habe mich in diese Stadt verliebt.
Heute bereite ich alles vor, um morgen mit der Fotografie beginnen zu können. Fotochemie herrichten, Kamera einstellen und natürlich den Kühlschrank füllen. Bald gibt es mehr Infos hier….
